Review

Sherlock Holmes in Washington: A Tale of Mystery, Intrigue, and the Flawless Detection by the Great Detective Himself

Mark Twain was a great admirer of Detective Sherlock Holmes. The fictional sleuth, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, has become an iconic figure of detective fiction. When I heard that Holmes had taken on the challenge of solving a mystery on American soil – in none other than its capital city of Washington D.C – I couldn’t resist the urge to see it and write about it.

The year was 1943. The world was at war, and Hollywood was churning out movies to keep people entertained and distracted from the ongoing conflict. Sherlock Holmes had already made his mark in cinema several times before, but this time he was up against something new – Nazis!

Yes, you read that correctly. Released in January 1943, Sherlock Holmes in Washington is a thrilling detective movie with espionage elements woven into its plot. The movie starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson for the eighth time.

The story begins when a top-secret memorandum is stolen from the State Department by an unknown thief disguised as a janitor. The memorandum contains vital information regarding America’s military movements and defenses against Nazi invasion during World War II. President Franklin D Roosevelt himself calls upon his trusted ally, Sherlock Holmes, to retrieve the document before it falls into enemy hands.

Holmes is skeptical at first but soon finds himself embroiled in a complex web of lies, conspiracies, and secrets that lead him to Germany’s High Command.

Alongside him is Dr Watson who provides comic relief with his bumbling demeanor and comical lines. Their chemistry has always been one of the highlights of all their movies together – and this one is no exception.

The plotline takes them from New York City to Washington D.C., where they meet several characters, both allies and foes. One of them is Mrs Hudson, the ever-faithful landlady, who greets Holmes and Watson as they enter her boarding house. She is delighted to see them – especially Holmes – and says, “Oh, Mr Holmes, you’re always welcome in my humble abode! Even if I have to lock up the silverware!”

Mrs Hudson’s wit and humor are an excellent addition to the movie. Her brief appearance leaves a lasting impression and reminds us why we love Sherlock Holmes’s universe so much.

Another character that stands out is Inspector Lestrade, who accompanies Holmes on his mission. The character has always been portrayed as a bumbling idiot in previous films but played with finesse here by actor Dennis Hoey.

The standout performance, however, comes from Basil Rathbone himself. His portrayal of Sherlock Holmes remains unmatched to this day. His style, his voice, his mannerisms – everything about him screams the Great Detective.

One of the most unforgettable scenes in the movie involves a chase that takes place on top of an express train traveling from New York City to Washington D.C. The scene was shot using miniatures and models instead of real trains, but it still looks impressive even by today’s standards.

The climax sees Sherlock Holmes putting all the pieces together while foiling Nazi spies’ plans to steal American military secrets for their country’s benefit. In doing so, he saves thousands of lives and becomes a hero once again.

Sherlock Holmes in Washington was received positively by critics upon its initial release and continues to be regarded as one of the better films in the series today. It received no major awards or nominations but remains popular among enthusiasts of detective fiction due to its exciting storyline and excellent performances.

In conclusion, “Sherlock Holmes in Washington” is an entertaining film that fans of mystery movies should not miss. It has everything – drama, humor, action – all wrapped up in a masterful performance by Basil Rathbone. Mark Twain would have been proud of this tale of mystery, intrigue, and the flawless detection by the Great Detective himself.
