Review
William Shakespeare once said, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” And in the movie “In the Line of Duty 3,” we are transported to a world where the line between good and evil is blurred, and the characters are forced to play their roles to perfection or risk losing their lives.
The plot of “In the Line of Duty 3” revolves around inspector Chan Chun (played by none other than Jackie Chan), who is assigned to protect a witness from a ruthless criminal organization. The witness, who is set to testify against the organization, becomes the target of their violent attacks, and Chan must do everything in his power to keep her safe.
As the story progresses, we are introduced to a diverse cast of characters. There’s Inspector Yuen (Lau Ching-wan), who initially clashes with Chan but eventually becomes his ally. Then there’s Madam Yeung (Yip San), who provides comedic relief with her quirky personality. And let’s not forget about the villainous gang members led by Panther (Ken Lo).
As with any Shakespearean tragedy, “In the Line of Duty 3” is filled with moments of suspense, action, and even romance. One memorable scene involves Chan and Yuen fighting off a group of thugs while strapped into chairs with explosives tied to their chests.
The dialogue in this movie is also reminiscent of Shakespearean plays. Lines like “Virtue itself turns vice being misapplied” and “All things foul would wear the brows of grace” hint at deeper themes explored in the movie.
The score for “In the Line of Duty 3,” composed by Michael Wandmacher, perfectly complements each scene. The fast-paced action sequences feature energetic music while quieter moments are accompanied by haunting melodies.
Despite being released almost thirty years ago, “In the Line of Duty 3” still holds up as one of Jackie Chan’s best movies. The cinematography is stunning, and the special effects are impressive for their time. The movie was even nominated for Best Action Choreography at the 1990 Hong Kong Film Awards.
But what truly makes this movie a classic is the stellar cast and their performances. Jackie Chan, as always, brings his unique brand of humor and martial arts prowess to the screen. Lau Ching-wan delivers a gripping portrayal of Inspector Yuen, and Ken Lo is downright terrifying as Panther.
It’s easy to see why “In the Line of Duty 3” has stood the test of time. From the intricate fight choreography to the nuanced characters, this movie is a masterpiece in its own right. Shakespeare himself would be proud.

- Summary : In a bloody beginning, a pair of stylish Japanese thieves steal some valuable gems. In a harrowing scene, during their escape, they kill the partner of a ruffled detective (think Columbo with a Chuck Barris hairdo). The detective swears revenge, and the thieves played by the athletic and lovely Michiko Nishiwaki and her terminally ill partner/lover played by Stuart Ong plan on going to Hong Kong, sell the loot, and buy weapons for the Red Army. All the while Cynthia, a rookie cop in Hong Kong, tries to get in on the action of the task force she has been assigned to, but unfortunately her superior is her uncle who wants to keep her out of harms way. The Japanese thieves and the detective trailing them, all make their way to Hong Kong, and Cynthia ends up entangled in the same mess with the detective, trying to bring the cold blooded and desperate thieves to justice. People on both sides are killed, leading to crossed paths of personal revenge, everyone out for each others blood.
