Review

What is it about horror movies that attracts the masses? Is it the adrenaline rush, the thrill of being scared out of your wits, or perhaps the anticipation of what’s to come?

The Ruins, a 2008 horror movie adapted from a novel by Scott Smith, has all these elements and more. It tells the tale of four American tourists who find themselves trapped in a Mexican jungle where an ancient and deadly force awaits them.

The story begins innocently enough with Jeff (Jonathan Tucker) and Amy (Jena Malone), two college students on spring break in Cancun. They meet up with Eric (Shawn Ashmore) and his girlfriend Stacy (Laura Ramsey), two longtime friends who have no qualms about venturing off the beaten path.

Their adventure leads them to an archeological site where they are warned to stay away from a nearby hill covered in vines. Naturally, they ignore the warning and make their way up the hill where they discover an ancient temple covered in strange markings.

As they explore further, they hear strange noises coming from beneath their feet and quickly realize that something is not right. A local man appears out of nowhere and refuses to let them leave, leaving the group stranded on top of the ruins with no food or water.

Soon after, they begin to notice small cuts appearing on their bodies which quickly become infected. They are forced to make a tough decision in order to survive – either stay put or attempt to escape through deadly terrain.

The plot of The Ruins may sound like your typical horror movie but its execution is far from it. The tension builds slowly throughout the film as we witness how this group of friends starts fracturing under pressure. There’s no monster jumping out every five minutes which makes everything feel more realistic and daunting.

One of the most striking aspects of The Ruins is how well-written its characters are. They’re not just cliched archetypes but real individuals with their own personalities, motivations and flaws. Each actor brings something unique to the table making it a joy to watch them interact with each other.

The cast is led by Jonathan Tucker, who does an excellent job portraying Jeff as a jaded and cynical individual who still has a sense of humor. Jena Malone is equally compelling as Amy, the smart and resourceful heroine who refuses to give up hope.

Shawn Ashmore and Laura Ramsey play their supporting roles effectively, managing to convey both love and betrayal in equal measure. Even the minor characters like the local man (played by Dimitri Baveas) leave an impression with their limited screentime.

Apart from its solid performances, The Ruins also boasts some impressive cinematography. The jungle setting creates an eerie atmosphere as we see our protagonists slowly succumb to madness. The camera angles often make us feel like we’re right there with them in the thick of danger.

The score for The Ruins is also worth mentioning as it adds another layer of tension to already suspenseful scenes. Composed by Graeme Revelle, the music ranges from haunting chants to ominous strings which perfectly complement the visuals on screen.

What’s great about The Ruins is how it doesn’t shy away from its horror roots but also manages to be more than just a run-of-the-mill slasher flick. It’s a smart and well-crafted movie that will keep you on edge until its shocking conclusion.

Despite its merits, The Ruins didn’t fare well at the box office upon its release in 2008, grossing only $22 million worldwide against a $15 million budget. This could be attributed to poor marketing or audience fatigue towards horror movies at the time.

However, over time it has gained a cult following thanks to word-of-mouth recommendations and DVD/Blu-ray releases. It currently holds a 5.8/10 rating on IMDb but don’t let that dissuade you from watching it.

In conclusion, The Ruins is a must-watch for any horror enthusiast or anyone looking for a good scare. With its engaging storyline, talented cast, impressive cinematography and haunting score, it stands out as one of the better horror movies of the 21st century.
