Spencer: A Majestic Portrayal of One Woman’s Struggle to Find Herself
Movies have a way of transporting us into an entirely different world, taking us on an emotional rollercoaster ride that leaves us feeling fulfilled, inspired and sometimes even heartbroken. However, not every film has the power to capture your attention and take you on a journey like Spencer does, it’s an exceptional movie, and I’ll tell you why.
Spencer is a movie about the life of Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) in the early 90s. The story follows her as she tries to find herself amidst the turmoil of her failing marriage and royal duties. The movie is set during one weekend when Princess Diana visits Sandringham Estate with her husband Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) for Christmas celebrations.
The plot of this drama lies in the struggle that Diana is going through. With so much expected of her as a royal figurehead at home and abroad, she struggles to cope with what feels like an impossible situation. It becomes clear that she desires nothing more than to be free from the confines of her royal duties and expectations.
What makes Spencer stand out from other biopics is how well it captures the essence of Princess Diana’s character. Kristen Stewart does an exceptional job portraying Diana’s shy nature, elegance, and sensitivity – truly making it feel like we’re watching Princess Diana on screen.
The acting performances were some of the most captivating elements of Spencer’s production. Kristen played Princess Diane perfectly by expressing vulnerability, frustration, resentment and fear effortlessly in almost every scene. Jack Farthing was also quite impressive as Prince Charles – he captured Charles’ awkwardness, frustrations with his wife’s unhappiness and his own lacklustre passion for life effortlessly.
Director Pablo Larraín crafts a masterpiece by creating a perfect blend of drama and comedy that keeps audiences engaged throughout the entire run time. At times heart-wrenching, Spencer also has moments of lighthearted humor that help to break the tension and add balance to the narrative.
One of my favorite aspects of Spencer is its score. Jonny Greenwood’s musical compositions perfectly complement each scene, adding a sense of depth and authenticity to the film’s atmosphere.
The film’s splendid cinematography was also something that stood out to me. Claire Mathon’s camera work captured the grandeur and solemnity of the Sandringham Estate, while also highlighting Princess Diana’s attention-to-detail through close-up shots.
While Spencer was a magnificent production, it could not escape criticism. Some people said that Kristen Stewart wasn’t right for the role of Princess Diana because she didn’t have much resemblance with her physical features. They further argued that Stewart’s American accent was slight but still noticeable in some scenes.
Nevertheless, these minor issues didn’t detract from the overall quality of this movie. Watching Spencer was an emotional rollercoaster ride from start to finish, and it felt like I was watching Princess Diana going through her struggles in real life.
In conclusion, Spencer is an outstanding movie that provides an insightful look into the life of one of Britain’s most iconic figures. The film does an excellent job capturing Princess Diana’s character while staying true to her story as she navigated through her royal duties amidst marital distress. With exceptional performances from Kristen Stewart, Jack Farthing and an incredible score by Jonny Greenwood, this is a movie that should be on everyone’s watchlist for 2022!
