Sleepaway Camp: The Surprising Horror Classic That Redefined the Genre

When Sleepaway Camp was released in 1983, it was a modest, low-budget horror film that seemed destined for obscurity. But over the years, it has developed a cult following thanks to its shocking twist ending and unconventional approach to the genre. In many ways, Sleepaway Camp is a movie that defies categorization – it’s part slasher flick, part coming-of-age story, and part social commentary.

The film’s plot revolves around Angela Baker (played by Felissa Rose), an introverted teenager who is sent to Camp Arawak for the summer. There, she is bullied by her fellow campers and harassed by her cruel cousin Ricky (played by Jonathan Tiersten). As the body count starts to rise, it becomes clear that someone at the camp is a killer – but who could it be?

What sets Sleepaway Camp apart from other horror films of its era is its unflinching portrayal of adolescent cruelty and social ostracism. Angela is an outcast from the moment she arrives at camp – her shyness and awkwardness making her an easy target for bullies like Judy (played by Karen Fields). Even Ricky, who is ostensibly on Angela’s side, often treats her with contempt and impatience.

Director Robert Hiltzik uses this atmosphere of hostility to build tension throughout the film. By contrasting scenes of innocent summer fun (swimming in the lake, roasting marshmallows) with moments of brutal violence (a boy drowning in the lake, a girl being stung to death by bees), he creates a sense of dread that permeates every frame.

Of course, what Sleepaway Camp is perhaps best known for is its shocking twist ending. **SPOILER ALERT** It turns out that Angela is not actually Angela at all – instead, she is Peter, her brother who was thought to have died in a boating accident years earlier. The real Angela died in the same accident, and their Aunt Martha (played by Desiree Gould) raised Peter as a girl to replace her.

This revelation is one of the most jaw-dropping moments in horror history. It’s not just that the audience has been tricked into thinking that Angela is a girl – it’s that they’ve been forced to confront their own assumptions about gender and identity. Sleepaway Camp challenges us to question why we assume that girls should be meek and timid, while boys are strong and aggressive.

But for all its subversive themes, Sleepaway Camp is also a movie that revels in its own absurdity. From the over-the-top performances (Fields’ Judy is a particular highlight) to the cheesy special effects (the bee scene looks like it was filmed with a hand-held camera), there’s an undeniable campiness to the film that makes it hard not to love.

Over the years, Sleepaway Camp has become something of a cultural touchstone – inspiring countless imitations and homages, as well as sparking endless debates about its artistic merits. But whatever your opinion on the film may be, there’s no denying its place in horror history.

As Hiltzik himself said in an interview with Fangoria magazine: “It’s definitely not for everybody… but those who get it really seem to get it.”
