Selma is a 2014 American historical drama that chronicles the events of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by civil rights activists. The movie explores the struggles of Martin Luther King Jr. and his followers as they fight for equality against the backdrop of brutal violence and institutionalized racism. With exceptional performances and powerful imagery, Selma is a poignant reminder of the cost of freedom and the importance of standing up for what is right, no matter how difficult or dangerous it may be.

Review
Dear Reader,
It is with immense pleasure that I reflect upon the film “Selma”, a masterpiece of cinematic artistry, from the perspective of a true admirer of Jane Austen’s writing style. This movie, set in 1965 Alabama, is at once an inspiring and heartbreaking portrayal of the Civil Rights Movement and its leaders’ struggles.
The story focuses on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., magnificently portrayed by David Oyelowo. His relentless efforts to push for voting rights for African Americans in the South – particularly during a time when they are being systematically discriminated against – serve as a beacon of hope in an otherwise bleak time.
As we see Dr. King attempting legal negotiations with President Lyndon B. Johnson (Tom Wilkinson), we soon realize that not everyone shares his vision or principles; even those who are supposed to stand by him as he seeks justice for his people are not always trustworthy.
Despite these setbacks, Dr. King’s unwavering commitment to nonviolence and his skillful oratory abilities give him a sense of power that ultimately leads to positive change.
The cast members’ performances were simply spellbinding. This is particularly true in the characterizations of Coretta Scott King (Carmen Ejogo), Ralph Abernathy (Colman Domingo), John Lewis (Stephan James), and Andrew Youngs (Andre Holland) whose roles complemented Dr. King’s lead performance beautifully.
The score was equally impressive, composed by Jason Moran; it beautifully captures the essence of what we see on screen: scenes of struggle, triumph, sorrow, and hope all rolled into one unforgettable experience.
From start to finish, this film immerses us completely into the world it portrays; it takes us back in time to one of America’s darkest periods while simultaneously reminding us how far we have come since then. The director’s eye for detail and emphasis on accuracy – both historically and culturally – make “Selma” an important piece of art for all Americans.
In conclusion, Selma is an epic movie that deserves its place in cinematic history. It tells the story of a man who fought for what he believed in and inspired millions along the way. I thoroughly recommend it as a masterpiece and a testament to one of America’s greatest men.
Yours truly,
Jane Austen
