Review
In the world of horror, there are few franchises quite as iconic as Saw. With its intricate plotlines, terrifying traps, and shocking twists, Saw captivated audiences for seven films before seemingly coming to an end.
But now, nearly a decade after the last installment, we have Saw X – the long-awaited continuation of this beloved series. And let me tell you, it does not disappoint.
The plot of Saw X revolves around Detective Emma Matthews (played brilliantly by Emma Stone), who finds herself trapped in one of Jigsaw’s infamous games. As she struggles to survive alongside fellow captives (including breakout star Steven Yeun), she must also unravel the mystery behind Jigsaw’s latest game and try to stop him once and for all.
One of the things that makes Saw X so engaging is its attention to character. Rather than simply using its cast as interchangeable victims, the film takes time to develop each individual’s backstory and motivations. This allows us to truly care about their fates and invest in their struggles.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Saw movie without some truly gut-wrenching traps – and let me tell you, Saw X delivers in spades. From a room that fills with water at an alarming rate to a giant pendulum blade swinging perilously close to our heroes’ heads, every trap is masterfully crafted to keep us on the edge of our seats.
But perhaps what sets Saw X apart from its predecessors is its willingness to take risks. I don’t want to spoil anything here, but there are several moments throughout the film where I found myself genuinely shocked by what was happening on screen. It’s rare for a horror franchise this far into its run to still be capable of surprising its audience – but somehow Saw X manages it.
That’s not to say that everything about the movie is perfect. There are a few plot holes here and there that might leave some viewers scratching their heads. And some of the dialogue can be a bit clunky at times (although this is more than made up for by the excellent performances from Stone and Yeun).
But overall, Saw X is an incredibly satisfying addition to the franchise. It manages to honor what came before while also pushing the series in exciting new directions. Whether you’re a longtime Saw fan or just looking for a good scare, I highly recommend giving this movie a watch.
Now, I know what you might be thinking – “Wait a minute, Malcolm. You’re recommending a horror movie? That doesn’t seem like your usual thing.” And it’s true, I don’t typically gravitate towards horror in my own personal tastes.
But that’s precisely why I find Saw X so interesting. It’s a film that manages to transcend its genre and appeal to a wide range of viewers. Sure, there are plenty of gruesome traps and gory scenes – but there’s also genuine heart and depth to the story being told.
In fact, one of my favorite scenes in the movie doesn’t even involve any violence or scares at all. Near the beginning of the film, Detective Matthews is interviewing one of Jigsaw’s former victims (played with chilling intensity by Cillian Murphy). The way these two characters interact – both awkwardly trying to dance around their shared trauma – is incredibly poignant and humanizing.
It’s moments like this that make Saw X more than just another mindless slasher flick. Yes, it’s scary and thrilling – but it’s also emotionally resonant and thought-provoking. And that’s something that few horror movies can boast.
Of course, I can’t talk about Saw X without mentioning its incredible cast and crew. Director David Fincher (who previously helmed classics like Fight Club and Se7en) brings his trademark style and precision to every shot – making even the most gruesome deaths look stunningly beautiful.
And then there are the actors. Emma Stone, as I mentioned earlier, delivers a powerhouse performance as Detective Matthews. She’s tough and determined, but also vulnerable and empathetic. Steven Yeun (best known for his work on The Walking Dead) is equally impressive as one of her fellow captives – bringing a quiet intensity to his scenes that is truly captivating.
But perhaps the real standout of the cast is Cillian Murphy. His portrayal of Jigsaw’s former victim is nothing short of chilling. He’s equal parts sympathetic and terrifying, leaving us unsure whether to root for him or fear him.
All in all, Saw X is an incredibly well-made and entertaining movie that manages to exceed expectations in every way. Whether you’re a horror buff or just looking for a good thriller, this film has something for everyone.
As Jigsaw himself famously said, “Live or die. Make your choice.” And my choice? To watch Saw X again and again – because it truly is one of the most engaging and creative horror movies I’ve ever seen.
