The Power of Vulnerability in “Repeater”: A Story of Healing and Transformation
As a shame researcher, I often study how individuals and groups navigate vulnerability, connection, and empathy. While my work mostly focuses on real-life experiences, every once in a while I encounter a movie that captures these themes with stunning authenticity and creativity. “Repeater” is one such film, directed by the talented filmmaker John Doe and written by his collaborator Jane Doe.
The premise of “Repeater” is deceptively simple: a young woman named Rachel (played with remarkable nuance and depth by Emily Smith) wakes up every day to find that she’s reliving the same day over again. She soon realizes that she’s stuck in a time loop that nobody else can see or remember. At first, Rachel tries to use this strange phenomenon to her advantage, experimenting with different choices and outcomes until she’s satisfied with the results.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Rachel meets an elderly man named William (portrayed with tenderness by Robert Redford), who teaches her about mindfulness and gratitude. He tells her: “When you realize that you have all you need right here and right now, you can stop chasing after what you think you want. You can start giving thanks for what you already have.” This message resonates deeply with Rachel, who had been chasing after success and external validation without appreciating the blessings in her life.
Another memorable moment is when Rachel has a heart-to-heart conversation with her estranged sister Sarah (played by the dynamic Zoey Jones), who reveals her own struggles with addiction and recovery. The chemistry between Smith and her romantic interest Alex (played by Tom Holland) is palpable and engaging, without resorting to cliches or stereotypes. It has also sparked debates among fans about its themes and messages, with some critics arguing that it promotes a naive or unrealistic view of personal growth and healing.
As someone who values vulnerability as a key ingredient of courage and resilience, I see “Repeater” as an inspiring example of how stories can help us expand our emotional range, deepen our empathy for others, and connect with our own strengths and weaknesses. It reminds us that we all have the power to change ourselves by opening ourselves up to vulnerability and connection. As Rachel learns throughout her repeated days: “I don’t need more time. I just need to use it better.”
