Review

I reckon there is naught like a good movie to take one’s mind off the drab and dreary world we live in. And “Life with Mikey” is just the flick to do so. This 1993 picture, directed by James Lapine, was a heart-warming comedy that gave folks a glimpse into the life of Mikey Chapman (Michael J. Fox), a former child star who now works as an agent for young talent.

The plotline follows Mikey as he discovers a streetwise kid named Angie Vega (Christina Vidal) and decides to take her under his wing and make her a star. The only problem is that Angie is no easy sell, with a tough demeanor and stubborn streak that puts even Mikey’s patience to the test. Amidst all this, he must also contend with his dysfunctional family and reconcile old wounds from his own childhood fame.

Truth be told, “Life with Mikey” was not well received by critics on its release. Some said it was too predictable while others found fault with the editing or felt that Fox’s performance lacked depth. But I reckon that they are missing the point altogether – this movie isn’t meant to be some profound masterpiece or a critique of Hollywood; it’s simply an enjoyable romp through the ups and downs of showbiz.

For one thing, the performances are top-notch all around. Fox is charming as ever in his role as Mikey, blending humor and vulnerability in just the right amounts. Vidal also shines as Angie; she brings an authenticity to her character that makes her relatable even when she’s being difficult.

But what really sets “Life with Mikey” apart from other ’90s comedies is its heartwarming themes of family and redemption. Through Mikey’s journey to connect with both Angie and his estranged brother (Nathan Lane), we see him come to terms with his own past and find a way to move forward. It’s a message that is just as relevant today as it was nearly 30 years ago.

Of course, no discussion of this movie would be complete without mentioning its amazing soundtrack. From the jazzy opening theme to the infectious tunes sung by Angie and her new friends, the music in “Life with Mikey” is an absolute delight. It captures the energy and spirit of New York City in a way that few other films have managed to do.

In summation, “Life with Mikey” may not have won any major awards or broken box office records, but it has stood the test of time as a classic feel-good movie. It reminds us that sometimes all we need is a little bit of laughter and love to make life worthwhile. And I reckon that Mark Twain himself would agree that there ain’t nothing wrong with that.
