Review
“Lady Macbeth,” a film written by Nikolai Leskov and directed by William Oldroyd, is a marvel to behold. It takes the audience on a thrilling journey through Russia in the 19th century, where Katherine (Florence Pugh), a young woman who has been sold into marriage to an older man, finds herself caught in a web of power, lust and desire.
From the opening scene, it becomes evident that this movie is not for the faint-hearted. It is bloody, raw and visceral. Even so, Lady Macbeth isn’t just about the sex and violence. It challenges society’s expectations of women as well as class divides and privileges that come along with it.
The plot of Lady Macbeth revolves around Katherine’s character who finds herself stifled in her new home which leads her to indulge in an affair with her groom – Sebastian (Cosmo Jarvis). Thus begins the story of power struggles as she becomes increasingly ruthless and manipulative in an effort to get what she wants.
In true Mark Twain style, one can’t ignore how well-portrayed each character is; they seemed so real that one could feel their emotions emanating through their performance. Florence Pugh was mesmerizing as Katherine; she captured every nuance of insanity lurking beneath her character’s calm exterior.
The dialogue between characters was sublime as it conveyed societal norms at that time effectively. The cast members were diverse and excellent; Cosmo Jarvis did justice to his role as Sebastian – subservient yet sultry enough to attract Katherine.
The film does not shy away when presenting sex scenes or gory actions; instead, it takes pride in realistically portraying what happened during those times. There are scenes where blood is splattered everywhere -from walls to clothes-, but unlike most films with excessive violence which only serves to shock us without adding value, Lady Macbeth uses these moments to accurately depict societal constructs of power at play.
The film was shot beautifully, with each shot composed incredibly meticulously. Director William Oldroyd does not miss a beat as he takes us through the intimate moments shared by the leads or even when portraying the everyday hustle and bustle of life in a 19th-century household.
Furthermore, the musical score was excellent, seamlessly blending in with the scenes. The soundtracks were well-timed and added to the atmosphere that encapsulated that era. The use of silence was also impressive, allowing for moments of reflection on what has just transpired.
Lady Macbeth is an honest portrayal of society’s constructs that are still relevant to this day. As Mark Twain would phrase it, “A classic is something everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read.”
Despite being well-received by critics and deservedly earning several nominations for awards such as BAFTA’s -Best Debut Screenwriter- or being named best British Film at Venice Film Festival, Lady Macbeth isn’t a widely popular movie. But that shouldn’t deter anyone from watching it.
In conclusion, Lady Macbeth is an excellent movie that deserves all the accolades it has received so far. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to give yourself some time to do so because, as Twain would say after watching this masterpiece: “The difference between a good movie and a bad one is like the difference between heaven and hell.”
