As you might know, the world of cinema is one that is constantly shifting and evolving. New themes, stories, characters, and production techniques emerge every year to draw us into their imaginative universes and provide us with a brief escape from the mundane reality of our lives. One movie that caught my attention recently is “John Carter” – based on a sci-fi novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs – and I must say, it was a real treat for my eyes and mind.
The movie follows the journey of John Carter (played by Taylor Kitsch), a Civil War veteran who finds himself transported to Mars, which is called Barsoom by its inhabitants. There, he meets various alien races, including the Tharks – 12-foot tall green-skinned warriors who initially capture him but later become his allies. He also encounters Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), who is fighting for her people’s freedom against the tyrannical rule of Sab Than (Dominic West) and his army.
The plot might sound simple enough, but believe me when I say that director Andrew Stanton has done an excellent job in bringing this epic tale to life on the big screen. The movie is visually stunning with its breathtaking landscapes of deserts and ruins, vibrant colors of different species inhabitating Mars, mesmerizing action scenes with swords and spears. But what sets it apart is the depth given to each character – even the villains have their reasons for doing what they do.
One quote that stood out to me was when John Carter tells Dejah Thoris: “I have been sent here to stop these senseless wars. To stop Matai Shang [Mark Strong] from manipulating your people into killing themselves.” It highlights one of the key themes of the movie – that war only leads to destruction and death.
The casting choices were spot-on as well. Taylor Kitsch manages to pull off both a hardened war veteran and a fish-out-of-water character effortlessly. Lynn Collins shines as the strong-willed princess who refuses to give up her fight for justice. Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, and Thomas Haden Church provide excellent voice acting for the CGI Tharks.
The music score by Michael Giacchino completes the immersive experience of the movie – it captures the grandeur and emotional depth of each scene beautifully. The theme song “A Thern For The Worse” stands out as it marks a turning point in the story when John Carter realizes his true purpose on Mars.
Despite all these positives, “John Carter” did not fare well at the box office – in fact, it was one of the biggest flops in cinematic history. Some critics pointed out that it suffered from poor marketing, confusing plot points, and lack of chemistry between the lead actors. However, I believe that these criticisms are unjustified.
The filming of “John Carter”, which took place mainly in Utah and New Mexico, was an ambitious project that relied heavily on innovative technology to create its alien landscapes and creatures. The crew faced several challenges while shooting – including harsh weather conditions and complex visual effects – but they managed to deliver a stunning masterpiece that transports us to another world.
In terms of awards and recognition, “John Carter” received nominations for Best Special Visual Effects at both the Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards. While it didn’t win any major awards, it has gained a dedicated fanbase over time who appreciate its unique blend of action, adventure, romance, and science fiction.
One particular scene that I found memorable was when John Carter first discovers his ability to jump higher and farther than any other man on Mars due to its lighter gravity – this leads to some exhilarating chase sequences across rooftops and landscapes later on in the movie.
As for gossip surrounding the production – there were rumors that actor Taylor Kitsch had injured himself while performing stunts on set, but he later clarified that it was just a minor injury that didn’t affect the filming. Also, there were reports of tensions between director Andrew Stanton and producer Jim Morris over the movie’s marketing campaign, which might have contributed to its lackluster performance at the box office.
In terms of special effects and visuals, “John Carter” was a marvel to behold. The CGI creatures and landscapes were seamless and believable, which is no easy feat considering the sheer amount of VFX involved in creating them.
