Review
Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to regale you with a tale of wit and mischief, as befitting the works of one Samuel Clemens, known to many as Mark Twain. But this is no ordinary story – nay, this is the story of a movie, a cinematic delight that goes by the name of ‘Gambit’.
Now, let us set the scene – ‘Gambit’ is a 2012 comedy crime caper film directed by Michael Hoffman. The screenplay was written by Joel and Ethan Coen of ‘The Big Lebowski’ fame, which should give you an indication as to what kind of shenanigans are in store. But don’t just take my word for it – let’s dive into the plot and see what twists and turns await.
Our protagonist is one Harry Deane (played with suave charm by Colin Firth), an art curator who hatches a plan to swindle his abusive boss Lionel Shahbandar (Alan Rickman, relishing every inch of his villainous role) out of a valuable painting. To do so, he enlists the help of Texas rodeo queen PJ Puznowski (Cameron Diaz), who bears more than a passing resemblance to the woman in the painting they plan to switch out.
Of course, things don’t go quite as smoothly as planned. There are disguises, double-crosses, and even some unexpected romance along the way. And through it all, there’s an undercurrent of sly humor that will leave even the most jaded viewer with a smile on their face.
But enough about the plot – let’s talk about some other aspects that make ‘Gambit’ such a delightful romp through the world of con artists and art collectors.
First and foremost, we have our talented cast. Colin Firth brings his usual impeccable timing to Harry Deane, imbuing him with a sense of world-weary cynicism that makes his eventual triumph all the more satisfying. Cameron Diaz, meanwhile, is a revelation as PJ – her Texas drawl and tough-as-nails attitude are the perfect counterpoint to Firth’s British reserve.
And then there’s Alan Rickman. Oh, how we love to hate him – his performance as Lionel Shahbandar is a masterclass in villainy, all sneering arrogance and cold calculation. He’s the kind of bad guy you love to see get his comeuppance, and ‘Gambit’ certainly doesn’t disappoint on that front.
But it’s not just the acting that makes ‘Gambit’ such a joy to watch. The score, by Rolfe Kent, is whimsical and fun, perfectly capturing the film’s mischievous tone. And the cinematography, by Florian Hoffmeister, gives us some truly gorgeous shots of both London and rural Texas.
Of course, no film is without its flaws. Some critics felt that the Coen brothers’ script was too slight for their usual standards of excellence; others felt that Cameron Diaz was miscast in her role. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise delightful movie.
So there you have it – ‘Gambit’, a film that combines screwball comedy with clever heist hijinks to create an experience that will leave you grinning from ear to ear. As Mark Twain himself once said: “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” With ‘Gambit’, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying a rollicking good time at the movies.
