Review

The movie “Demolition” is a true masterpiece that teaches us the valuable lesson of learning to let go of the past in order to embrace the future. This powerful drama, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, revolves around the life of Davis Mitchell (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker who struggles to cope with the sudden death of his wife, Julia (Heather Lind), in a car accident.

The storyline begins with a young couple driving on the freeway when they are suddenly involved in a fatal accident. While Julia tragically dies on impact, Davis miraculously survives but finds himself unable to deal with his grief and loss.

As an investment banker, Davis is used to fixing things that are broken. He finds solace in deconstructing and demolishing objects in his life, including his refrigerator and office cubicle. But what starts as an act of catharsis spirals into an obsession, causing him to alienate everyone around him.

Davis’s life takes an unexpected turn when he starts sending complaint letters to a vending machine company where he fails to get his M&Ms from one of their machines. His letters get noticed by Karen Moreno (Naomi Watts), a customer service representative who is drawn into Davis’s world and forms an unlikely bond with him.

As Davis gradually unravels and exposes himself emotionally through detailed letters, Karen becomes his confidante and encourages him to break free from his self-destructive behavior.

One of the most poignant moments in the film comes when Karen tells Davis:

“You know what? Sometimes everything has to be taken apart before you can put it back together.”

This quote perfectly sums up the movie’s central message about growth through destruction. It emphasizes that sometimes we need to break down our lives and emotions entirely before we can begin anew.

Jake Gyllenhaal delivers an outstanding performance as Davis Mitchell, portraying both vulnerability and strength in equal parts. Naomi Watts shines in her role as Karen, providing a much-needed counterbalance to Davis’s emotions.

The score by composer Bryan Senti masterfully captures the film’s melancholic and introspective tone, further accentuating the emotional highs and lows of the characters.

Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, “Demolition” failed to perform well at the box office. Nevertheless, it remains an underrated gem that deserves more attention and appreciation.

The cinematography and special effects are top-notch, particularly in scenes where Davis demolishes objects. The sound design is equally impressive, highlighting the jarring sounds of demolition alongside serene moments of silence.

While some critics criticized the plot as contrived and forced, I believe that this movie is a work of art that challenges us to confront our own grief and motivations. The character development throughout “Demolition” is remarkable; we witness Davis’s emotional evolution from a numb shell to a person who is willing to rebuild his life entirely.

In conclusion, “Demolition” tackles profound themes with sensitivity and intelligence. It encourages us to let go of what we consider necessary in our lives and appreciate what truly matters: relationships with others. This movie teaches us that sometimes demolition is necessary for growth, evolution, and rebuilding.
