Review
The air was crisp and the moon hung high in the sky, giving off a pale blue light. It was a perfect night for a scary movie, and what better way to spend it than watching the latest thriller – Ouija: Origin of Evil. This film has everything that a horror fan could ask for – jump scares, creepy music, and an engaging storyline that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
Set in 1967 Los Angeles, Ouija: Origin of Evil follows Alice Zander (Elizabeth Reaser) and her two daughters Lina (Annalise Basso) and Doris (Lulu Wilson), who run a fraudulent séance business. Their lives change when they unknowingly invite an evil spirit into their home through a Ouija board. It’s a classic horror story, but what sets it apart is how the characters are portrayed.
Elizabeth Reaser’s performance as Alice is captivating. She brings depth to her character and makes us believe in her struggles as a single mother trying to make ends meet. Annalise Basso as Lina also delivers an impressive performance as the teenage daughter who is skeptical of her mother’s business but ultimately joins in to try to contact their deceased father.
But it’s Lulu Wilson’s portrayal of Doris that steals the show. Her innocent appearance quickly turns sinister as she becomes possessed by the evil spirit. Wilson’s performance is chilling and adds much-needed tension to the film.
Director Mike Flanagan has done an excellent job at creating a truly scary movie experience without relying on cheap scares or overdone special effects. The film is beautifully shot with hauntingly beautiful cinematography which enhances the eerie atmosphere.
The score by The Newton Brothers adds even more tension to already tense scenes and sets up jump scares perfectly. One particular scene towards the end had me gripping my seat with my hands.
Ouija: Origin of Evil has also created some interesting backstory to the Ouija universe. The film’s prologue is set in 1941 and sets up the events that eventually lead up to the main story, giving us a glimpse into the origins of the Ouija board and how it became associated with spirits.
Despite being a horror movie, Ouija: Origin of Evil also has some heartfelt moments that will make you connect with the characters. Alice’s struggle as a single mother trying to provide for her children is relatable, and Lina’s journey of coming to terms with her father’s death is heartwarming.
The film has received critical acclaim, with many praising its strong performances and effective scares. It’s also been a commercial success, grossing over $81 million worldwide on a budget of only $9 million.
However, not everyone has been impressed. Some critics have criticized the film for relying too heavily on tired horror tropes and not bringing anything new to the genre. Others have accused it of being exploitative of spiritualism practices.
Overall, Ouija: Origin of Evil is an engaging and frightening movie experience that will leave you wanting more. It features strong performances from the cast, stunning cinematography, and an effective score that will have you jumping out of your seat. It may not be for everyone, but if you’re a horror fan looking for a good scare, then this movie is definitely worth your time.
